The nature of the dwarf population in Abell 868

چکیده
We present the results of a study of the morphology of the dwarf galaxy population in Abell 868, a rich, intermediate redshift (z=0.154) cluster which has a galaxy luminosity function with a steep faint-end slope (α=–1.26±0.05). A statistical background subtraction method is employed to study the B −R colour distribution of the cluster galaxies. This distribution suggests that the galaxies contributing to the faint-end of the measured cluster LF can be split into three populations: dIrrs with B − R <1.4; dEs with 1.4≤B −R≤2.5; and contaminating background giant ellipticals (gEs) with B −R >2.5. The removal of the contribution of the background gEs from the counts only marginally lessens the faint-end slope (α=–1.22±0.16). However, the removal of the contribution of the dIrrs from the counts produces a flat LF (α=–0.91±0.16). The dEs and the dIrrs have similar spatial distributions within the cluster except that the dIrrs appear to be totally absent within a central projected radius of about 0.2 Mpc (Ho=75 km s −1 Mpc). The number densities of both dEs and dIrrs appear to fall off beyond a projected radius of ≃0.35 Mpc. We suggest that the dE and dIrr populations of A868 have been associated with the cluster for similar timescales but that evolutionary processes such as ‘galaxy harassment’ tend to fade the dIrr galaxies while having much less effect on the dE galaxies. The harassment would be expected to have the greatest effect on dwarfs residing in the central parts of the cluster.

The morphological decomposition of Abell 868 1
We report on the morphological luminosity functions (LFs) and radial profiles derived for the galaxy population within the rich cluster Abell 868 (z = 0.153) based purely on Hubble Space Telescope Imaging in F 606W. We recover Schechter functions (−24.
متن کاملEvidence for Steep Luminosity Functions in Clusters of Galaxies2
Luminosity Functions have been obtained for very faint dwarf galaxies in the cores of four rich clusters of galaxies (Abell 2052, Abell 2107, Abell 2199 and Abell 2666). It is found that the luminosity function of dwarf galaxies rises very steeply in these clusters, with a power-law slope of 2:2 (down to limiting absolute magnitudes M I 13 and M B 11 for H 0 = 75 km s 1 Mpc 1). A steepening of ...
متن کاملThe dwarf galaxy population in Abell 2218
We present results from a deep photometric study of the rich galaxy cluster Abell 2218 (z = 0.18) based on archival HST WFPC2 F606W images. These have been used to derive the luminosity function to extremely faint limits (MF606W ≈ −13.2 mag, μ0 ≈ 24.7mag arcsec ) over a wide field of view (1.3 h Mpc). We find the faint-end slope of the luminosity function to vary with environment within the clu...
متن کاملThe Star-forming Dwarf Galaxy Populations of Two Z ∼ 0.4 Clusters: Ms1512.4+3647 and Abell 851
We present the results of a deep narrow-band [OII] 3727 Å emission-line search for faint (g < 27), star-forming galaxies in the field of the z = 0.37 MS1512.4+3647 cluster. We find no evidence for an over-density of emission-line sources relative to the field at z ∼ 0.4 (Hogg et al. 1998), and therefore conclude that the MS1512.4+3647 sample is dominated by field [OII] emission-line galaxies wh...
متن کاملLow Surface Brightness Dwarf Galaxies in the Bristol – Anglo - Australian Observatory Virgo Cluster Survey
We describe a new, deep photographic survey of the Virgo Cluster which uses multiple exposures on Tech Pan film with the United Kingdom Schmidt Telescope to probe the dwarf population to fainter surface brightness limits than previous surveys. We have identified galaxies having sizes (≥ 3 arcsec scale length) and surface brightnesses (≤ 24.5 R mag arcsec −2) characteristic of those expected for...
